I thoroughly enjoyed my time at Oakland Heights on Friday morning. I learned a lot about the different reading levels and the characteristics of the different learning levels. There are definitely some tips I can take and use in my future classroom. Thank you!
I really enjoyed Oakland Heights on Friday morning. It was a great experience to see a reading level and then hear about the complete opposite reading level. I loved hearing the differences between the two groups. I was completely blow away at how the different reading level groups are structured and performed. I will definitely be using some tips in my future classroom that were used at Oakland Heights. Thank you for the experience!
I loved being able to come to Oakland Heights on Friday morning. It was a wonderful experience to see how differently two groups of different levels of readers are and to see how we can cater to the children to ensure they are always growing. There were a lot of ideas that I believe I will be able to carry into my own classroom one day. Thank you so much for allowing us to come into your school!
Thank you for opening your classrooms to our class on Friday! It was a great learning experience to see the varying reading groups and discuss it all afterwards. I feel as though I gained a better understanding of the varying levels of reading groups and hope to use this knowledge one day in my own classroom.
The atmosphere of Oakland Heights was so welcoming to the Arkansas Tech University Early Childhood Education majors on Friday, February 20, 2015. Thank you for opening your doors to us and letting us experience life inside the classroom. The new knowledge and techniques gained are priceless to us as future educators. The children were so well-behaved and respectful. The teachers were a blessing to observe and talk with. I loved my experience at Oakland Heights and hope to visit again!
I have only visited Oakland Heights one other time besides Friday. Each time I have been, I have experienced a very kind, hard working atmosphere. The students were full of respect and eagerness to learn. I loved how the administration took time from her busy day to talk one-on-one with our class! As she said, we are the future when it comes to teaching, so it was nice to see she cares about our success! Although we were only in the classroom 20-30 minutes, I feel as if I learned a lot! Thank you so much Oakland Heights! It was a wonderful experience and you are a wonderful school!
I am very thankful for the opportunity of being able to visit the school and classrooms. I gained some valuable knowledge about the different reading levels and some great advice of how to view and handle these different levels. Thank you so much for allowing us to have this experience and for answering our questions. It is greatly appreciated.
Friday was my first time to visit Oakland Heights. When I went, I experienced a very positive, kind, and hard-working environment. I loved that the administration took time out of their crazy, busy day to talk one-on-one with our class. It showed how much she cares about our success, it was very nice of her! I am very thankful for the opportunity to get to visit with the classrooms and this school. I really did learn a lot of valuable things that I will carry with me throughout my teaching career. Thank you so much Oakland Heights! It was a wonderful experience!
I really enjoyed being able to see a higher level reading group! I had no idea that students could be so excited about their own learning. I loved the idea of having a folder for the students to organize their thoughts on their reading and having a section to write down the things they had questions about. I also really enjoyed having the talking sticks to help encourage students to voice their own opinions.
This was my first visit to Oakland Heights. The atmosphere was positive and inviting. I appreciate Mrs. Turner allowing us to observe as she worked with her reading group. I can see how our group could be a distraction to her teaching, her sacrifice is greatly appreciated. Our discussion with Mrs. Shirley following the observation was very beneficial. I like how she had us compare the different reading groups. This allowed us to see how different the levels were. I was able to take something from each group that I can use in my future classroom. I loved the idea of talking sticks. Again, thank you so much for the time that you spent with us.
I enjoyed my visit to Oakland Heights. I was able to observe the students during instruction. It is always a good experience to take in classroom observation. I know the students were nervous while we were present but I am thankful the teacher and principal did not mind us coming to observe. The discussion on the different level learners gave me a lot of insight for future reference. - India Norfleet
I enjoyed my experience at Oakland Heights. This was my first experience with fourth grade, so it was a great learning experience. I was fortunate enough to witness Ms. Harris's reading group discussing their book. They were so respectful to one another and to the teacher and were really excited to discuss what they had read with everyone. It was also a great learning experience when Mrs. Shirley took time out of her busy day to discuss our observation afterwards. I will be able to take what I have learned from that day and apply it to my classwork and my future classroom. Thank you so much for allowing us this experience!
Our class visit to Oakland Heights was a wonderful learning experience. Mrs. Turner and Mrs. Harris gave us great insight on how to manage a reading group. It is evident after observing the students how much time both teachers put into meeting the needs of each of their students while challenging them to think at a higher level. To say I was impressed by the students would be an understatement. I sincerely appreciate Mrs. Shirley for spending so much time visiting with our class and sharing her knowledge to help prepare us for our future students. It is always valuable to have hands-on experiences in the classroom, and this one really helped bring what we are learning in our courses to life. Thank you so much, Oakland Heights, for such a fun and informative experience!
The trip to Oakland Heights was an awesome experience!! I enjoyed getting the opportunity to see the reading groups discuss the book they were reading. The teacher was great she did a wonderful job interacting with students and letting them share their perspectives of the book. I love love love the flag folder!! This is a great idea for the students to use while reading their books. I thought this was such a great idea I went home and made one for my son who is in first grade. I could see it helping him as he reads and progresses to higher levels of reading. Thank you for sharing your time and experience with our class.
I really appreciate Ms. Shirley and the teachers at Oakland Heights for allowing our class to come and observe the reading groups Friday, after such as crazy week with the weather. I learned a great deal about scaffolding and encouraging students through reading groups. I really enjoyed Ms. Harris' use of the post-it notes and folders for the students' questions and connections as they read on their own. I had never seen something like this done before. The students I observed in Ms. Harris' class were outstanding! Their use of terminology and manners wowed me and the other students in my group. Personally, I really appreciated Ms. Shirley for taking time from her busy day to work with our class. This was an overall encouraging and helpful experience for me. Thank you so much Oakland Heights for your time!
Friday was my first time to visit Oakland Heights Elementary School. I must day that I was very impressed! I enjoyed the discussion that took place between my classmates and noticing the differences between teaching lower level readers and higher level readers. I enjoyed having the opportunity to observe Ms. Turner. Thank you for your time! -Morgan Willis
I really enjoyed visiting Oakland Heights on Friday morning. I learn so much about the differences in guided reading groups. I saw and heard about many great teaching strategies I can take and use in my own classroom in the future. This visit was informative and fun. Thank you for letting us come and see your great school.
I observed at Oakland Heights my first semester in the ECED program. This school creates a fun and positive atmosphere for everyone. Although we did not spend much time in the classroom, I learned so much about the differences between teaching high level learners and low level learners. I enjoyed being able to discuss with my classmates about the differences between the two reading groups. Thank you so much for this wonderful opportunity to come visit your school!
Thank you so much for allowing us to come into your classrooms and watch your reading groups. I thoroughly enjoyed Mrs. Shirley explaining everything that goes on within the classrooms to us at the end of the visit. Mrs. Shirley really keeps up with the things going on in Oakland Heights Elementary and I really respect that. I loved talking with my other classmates and discussing the differences in what we saw. Thank you for allowing us to come into your classrooms and observe your reading groups. I really enjoyed watching Mrs. Harris guide these children in their student led discussion. The students were extremely respectful of one another and very interested in the discussion they were having. I liked Mrs. Harris' use of "Talking sticks" as well as her "Flag your thinking folder". This was a wonderful group to observe. I also appreciate Ms. Shirley taking the time to speak with us and allow for questions after the classroom visits. The question and answer discussion was invaluable. Thank you, again. This was a great experience!
I really enjoyed going to Oakland Heights Elementary to observe reading groups. I observed Mrs. Harris. There were many aspects of Mrs. Harris’ reading group that I really liked. I liked that the fourth grade teachers mixed their classes up for reading groups. I also loved the “Flag Your Thinking Folder”. This was a great idea. It allows children to organize their comprehension and keep them looking for parts in the book. Mrs. Harris used “Talking Sticks” with this group. I like this idea because it gives each child a fair chance to talk; shy children must speak, while outspoken children have to listen to their classmates. What I learned from this experience will better prepare me for internship and teaching on my own. Thank you for allowing our class to come into the school to observe, it is very helpful for us.
I really loved coming and getting to observe at Oakland Heights Elementary! I loved getting to see how wonderful teachers teach very different reading groups. I learned of different techniques to use such as the ones that have been mentioned already but my favorites were the talking sticks and post it notes. I thought it was very interesting to see afterwards the differences between the two groups. It floored me at how different they were. I just never really observed them that way I guess. It also amazed me at how different the teaching styles were for each group but the main point is that each group got what they needed. It makes sense that with two different groups, you wouldn't teach them the same way. I loved how each group was fitted with the perfect teaching strategy. Thank you for having us!!
